Male’ 24 July 2016 – The Maldives United Opposition has launched a Detainees & Welfare Fund at a function held on 24 July 2016 at the MDP Secretariat. MUO Shadow Minister for Home Affairs Ahmed Thasmeen Ali, Shadow Minister of Civil Rights Hassan Latheef and Shadow Minister of Health Social Security and Gender Sidhatha Shareef officiated at the function held to launch the fund.
The Detainees & Welfare Fund was set up to assist the families of those who may be arrested by Police during MUO political activities. The fund’s administrators would also track the status, gather and impart information on detainees, their whereabouts and stages of their cases.
The Detainees & Welfare Fund would be overseen by a committee of MUO shadow ministers as well as a special Committee to execute administration and outreach. The MUO leadership had set out regulations for the administration of the fund stipulating that records be kept up to international auditing standards.
Families of/or every detainee would receive an immediate donation of MRf 1000/- and those being remanded by Courts upon arraignment would receive Rf 5000/- as compassionate assistance from the fund. The Committee would determine further assistance such as hospitalization and medical costs and the welfare of detainee’s families.
