Condemning the Government’s Attempts to discredit United Opposition

The Maldives United Opposition (MUO) condemns in the strongest terms the Maldives government‘s attempts to discredit the United Opposition by stating the leader of the United Opposition former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed was involved in fabricating a warrant to arrest the President of the Maldives, Abdulla Yameen.

Less than 24 hours after the launch of the Maldives United Opposition, an anonymous witness testifying against the former Prosecutor General said Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed and Mr. Akram Kamaaluddheen were behind the issuance of the allegedly forged Court Warrant.

The United Opposition believes this demonstrates governments influence in judicial affairs and how it uses the judicial processes to undermine democracy.

On 07 February 2016, Maldives Police Services announced that they were investigating the issuance “a forged Court Warrant for the Police to arrest President Yaameen Abdul Gayoom” followed by the arrest of Magistrate Ahmed Nihan of the Maamigili Court and the former Prosecutor General Muhuthaz Muhusin.

The Maldives United Opposition appeals to all well-wishers and concerned institutions to prevail over the Maldives government to cease and desist from abusing the judiciary to incriminate and damage the reputations of political rivals and calls upon the government of Maldives to refrain from judicial interference.
